St. Monica Math Wizard Wins Recognition

29 Jun

Every year students from 235 countries participate in an on-line mathematics competition called World Maths Day. Students play against each other in real-time, mental math challenges. This year, St. Monica grade 9 student Gisu Ham came in 10th in Canada, correctly answering the most questions for his age division group 14-18 years. St. Monica mathematics teacher, Ms. Wanda Lloyd, says students benefit from this type of global participation. Ms. Lloyd says, “World Maths Day is all about participation. It gives students a feeling of being part of a global celebration of numbers; it unites students in the school with others around the world to set new world records in answering mental arithmetic challenges. It really created an amazing Math fever throughout the junior high population.”

Principal Rick Paolozzi notes that, “this competition is an excellent example of how computer technology can be used to its potential in providing students with unique learning opportunities.”

We are delighted to congratulate Gisu Ham for his huge success on World Maths Day 2010! Ms. Lloyd says this year’s challenge commenced the moment it was Wednesday, March 3rd West of the International Dateline and concluded 48 hours later when it was no longer March 3rd anywhere in the world. Since it is possible to track students’ on-line participation, some St. Monica students were logged-on and answering questions in the early hours of the morning.

Superintendent Luba Diduch and Principal Rick Paolozzi presented Gisu with an engraved medal and certificate from the World Maths Day organization. A total of 54 junior high students from St. Monica School competed in the exciting event. Congratulations to everyone who took part.
